1. Painting
A couple of cans of paint can actually transform the feeling of a room. The simplest way to do this is stick to light or neutral colours for the walls, and a plain white for the ceiling. Lighter shades open up a room and will make it look a lot larger. Lighter coloured walls also are better at reflecting any entering sunlight, making rooms appear brighter. To add contrast, try painting one wall in a darker shade of the colour used for the other three. This can provide a focal point in the room and add a stylish decorative touch.

2. Cushions
Instead of replacing all of your old furniture, it could be as easy as replace your cushions to give a different feel to a room. Choose a palette that compliments your walls or even choose colours in slightly different tones to create an interesting effect. There are an abundance of colours and patterns to select from and, when placed in a room with neutral walls, creates a more interesting area.

3. Rugs
Whether you have wall-to-wall carpeting or hard floors, adding a rug is an easy way to brighten any room in the home. The rug should complement your window treatments and cushions. It is advisable to choose a rug that has colours similar to your accessories. Place the rug in a number of places and in both directions to see what looks right. Remember, it’s your home and it should be put in a place which you are happy with.

4. Rearrange and Re-purpose
If your home is filled with pieces you love, try looking around the house and test whether a piece of furniture in one room could be can use in another. If this isn’t working, rearrange the furniture in the room receiving the make-over. Sometimes changing the arrangement of the furniture is enough to give an old room new appeal.

5. Curtains
A very easy way to update a room is to change the window treatments. You can do this by choosing fabrics that are light and airy which takes the weight out of the room. Light fabrics will also mean more light will come into the room giving it an instant boost in brightness. If you know someone who can sew, you could try creating your own curtains; it’s easier than you think.
